The idea of creating an interactive map of Armenian architectural monuments was first proposed by the Department of Theory, History, and Heritage of Architecture at the National University of Architecture and Construction of Armenia (NUACA) back in 2015. Within the framework of the initiative, young specialists and students developed demonstration examples of 3D photogrammetric models for the Yereruyk Basilica, Karmravor Church, and Odzun Cathedral.
Today, this idea has entered a new phase: the Armenian Monument Portal has become a reality with the support of the Centre du Patrimoine Arménien (CPA) in Valence, French Republic.
The portal is designed as a unified platform presenting all the monuments of the Armenian Highland, complete with the necessary scientific, historical, and professional information about them.
The main objective of developing the Armenian Monument Portal is to popularize Armenian architectural heritage, create 3D models of architectural monuments using modern information technologies, and develop theoretical 3D reconstructions of monuments based on these models.
A comprehensive database of architectural monuments will be formed on the portal, serving as a reliable source for students, researchers, specialists studying Armenian architectural heritage, and simply those interested in this heritage.
The development of the Armenian Monument Portal holds significant advantages, particularly for the National University of Architecture and Construction of Armenia. The university’s faculty includes most of the leading specialists engaged in the restoration of architectural monuments, as well as theorists and researchers of Armenian architecture.
NUACA is the only higher education institution in Armenia that trains architects who study and restore architectural heritage, running the Master’s educational program “Restoration of Architectural Heritage”. The university also possesses relevant laboratories and technical capabilities, providing a material and technical base to develop and expand the program.
The study of Armenian monuments, along with their proper appreciation and popularization within the context of world architecture, is not a task for a single generation. It is a continuous and long-term process that requires the transfer of knowledge, experience, and professional potential from generation to generation.
With its dedicated specialists, succeeding generations of students, and reliable partners, the National University of Architecture and Construction of Armenia is ready to ensure the continuity of this vital endeavor, contributing to the study, preservation, appreciation, and popularization of Armenian architectural heritage.
